Badder Science

I was amused by the How Does Homeopathy Work site just yesterday, and then saw this BBC article “Three films that would make Einstein blush” pointing out some of the weird science that fuels Hollywood.

I gave up when that bloke walked all the way to New York in The Day After Tomorrow losing friends and colleagues on the way only to have his boss fly in by helicopter when it all cleared up the day after (The Day After The Day After Tomorrow I suppose). It wasn’t the bad science so much as having Man Utd vs. Celtic on the TV of the doomed British scientists/hobbits – it was Ian Holm after all.

But I digress. The article points the finger at 3 main culprits: Deep Blue Sea, The 6th Day and The Core, singling out The Core for particular fury: “The film is so bad, it’s almost deliberately wrong just to irritate the scientists in the audience”.

IIRC Stanley Tucci died in that film and I was always left with the impression he may genuinely have been trying to kill himself rather than finish the script. Hilary Swank was in it too and at least part of her name was the working title for the film (an insider may or may not have told me).
